Shivapuri is the closest national park to Kathmandu, offering a rich array of flora and fauna. As the second highest hill near the Kathmandu Valley, it’s an ideal destination for a short, easy adventure close to the capital.
Our journey begins with a 20-minute drive from your hotel to Budhanilkantha Temple, located 8 km north of Kathmandu. After exploring this temple, we’ll hike through Shivapuri Conservation Area, home to over 500 species of plants and animals. The southern boundary of the park is guarded by a Nepal Army checkpoint for the park's security.
Next, we visit Nagi Gumpa, a renowned monastery situated at 2,330 meters above sea level, just north of Kathmandu and above Budhanilkantha Temple. This monastery is notable for its Buddhist nuns and attracts visitors for meditation.
After lunch and some time to explore the monastery and its surroundings, we’ll take a scenic shortcut downhill to Kopan. From there, we’ll drive back to Kathmandu, concluding our adventure with joyful memories and a refreshed spirit.

Weather conditions, the health condition of a group member, natural disasters, and such, can contribute to changes in the itinerary when traveling in remote mountainous regions. In these extreme situations, we kindly request that you offer your full co-operation to the trusted leader of the group appointed by the Alpine Club of Himalaya. However, we assure you that we will make every effort to keep to the above itinerary.

Start and end in Kathmandu with the Shivapuri National Park Hike – Day Hike! This 1-day tour package takes you through Kathmandu and Shivapuri National Park, including an expert guide, meals, and transport.
Shivapuri National Park is the closest national park to Kathmandu and is renowned for its rich biodiversity. It’s the second highest hill near the Kathmandu Valley and offers a delightful short adventure close to the capital. The park is home to over 500 species of flora and fauna, and the hike leads you to Baghdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River, which is believed to flow from the mouth of a tiger.
Your day begins with breakfast at your hotel, followed by a 20-minute drive to Budhanilkantha Temple, located 8 km north of Kathmandu. After exploring this temple, you will hike through the Shivapuri conservation area. You’ll pass the Nepal Army check post at the southern boundary, ensuring the park’s security. Continue to Nagi Gumpa, a monastery situated at an altitude of 2,330 meters, north of Kathmandu and above Budhanilkantha Temple. This monastery is known for its Buddhist nuns and is a peaceful spot for meditation.
Following lunch and some time to enjoy the monastery and surrounding vegetation, you’ll take a short downhill trail to Kopan. After about two hours of hiking, you’ll return to Kathmandu with happy memories of your day.
We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:00 am and return you around 3:00-4:00 pm after the trip. Private transport and an English-speaking, experienced hiking guide will be provided. Please bring some water and light snacks for the hike, as there are no lunch facilities along the trail. Tipping for the driver and guide is appreciated but optional.
