Garmisch at the foot of the Zugspitze and Sterzing, Italy's northernmost town in South Tyrol, are linked by one of the most varied Alpine crossings. The start along the thundering waterfalls of the Partnachklamm gorge is impressive and we continue past Elmau Castle towards Mittenwald. We then ascend through the wild rocky backdrop of the Karwendel until we stand above the rooftops of Innsbruck and before us lies one of the most impressive views of the main Alpine ridge. Passing the foot of the striking Serles, the trail leads us through the Stubai Alps over into the Gschnitztal valley and on to the Obernberger valley with views of the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps. We cross the main Alpine ridge at Sandjöchl at an altitude of 2,165 m on lonely paths that were once used by smugglers. Via the Dolomieuweg trail, we reach the summit of the Rosskopf on the last stage, from where we float comfortably down to the medieval streets of Sterzing in the cable car.

- Willkommen in Garmisch-Partenkirchen am Fuß der Zugspitze Um 15 Uhr treffen wir unseren Bergwanderführer für unsere Alpenüberquerung im Hotel. Nach einer kurzen Begrüßung brechen wir gleich auf zu einer kleinen Tour durch Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Der berühmte Kurort liegt inmitten einer eindrucksvollen Gebirgskulisse, überragt von Deutschlands höchstem Berg, der 2.962 Meter hohen Zugspitze. Auf einem kleinen Rundgang durch die Straßen und Gassen blicken wir ein bisschen in die Kultur und das Brauchtum der Region hinein. Über schöne Plätze, durch die Fußgängerzone und kleine historische Straßen mit den bekannten bemalten "Lüftlmalerei"-Häuser führt unser Weg in ein typisches bayerisches Gasthaus, wo wir gemeinsam Abend essen.
