نظرة عامة على الرحلة

This 11-day trip on the Peaks of the Balkans Trail starts in Shkodra, the historic capital of the northern highlands of Albania, and leads counter-clockwise through Kosovo to Montenegro and back. A scenic boat trip across the fjord-like Lake Koman takes you from the remarkable Valbona Valley into the Albanian Alps. From the summer settlement of Cerem, you hike along the mountain trail below the mighty Mount Kollata up to the remote Doberdol mountain pasture, where you spend the night in shepherd's huts. On the Tromedja, the border triangle, the concept of cross-border hiking becomes tangible, and the panoramic view rewards the effort. Long caravan trails on softer terrain lead into Kosovo, through mountain pastures and the now peaceful Rugova highlands. Crossing the Montenegrin Prokletije National Park opens up new vistas as you pass the highest point of the route and then hike along the ridge path above the impressive Grbaja Valley with views of the dolomite-like Karanfili Mountains. An ancient route takes you through the heart of the Cursed Mountains back to Albania, where you will learn about the former highland laws of Kanun in idyllic Theth. After a dip in the glacial stone baths of Nderlysaj, you end your journey in the lively capital Tirana.

  1. Welcome to the Balkans! We will pick you up from Tirana (airport/city) for the two-hour transfer to Shkodra. Here you will receive your equipment (road book, maps, telephone, GPS), a briefing on your tour and can clarify any outstanding questions. Afterwards, the city invites you to take a stroll through the pedestrian zone, which is lined with bourgeois townhouses and is reminiscent of the city's prestigious past. Immerse yourself in the Italian flair of the city, mingle in the hustle and bustle of the bazaar to buy dried fruit and other snacks, or delve into the past captured on film in the Marubi photo library. Just a short cab ride away is Rozafa Castle, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view - a foretaste of the days ahead on the journey through the Albanian Alps. If you have more time, you can rent a bike (€5/day) and visit the lakeside villages of Shiroke and Zogaj to eat fish and swim in the largest lake in the Balkans. If you want to take it a little easier, enjoy an espresso with the locals or visit the craft stores before daylight fades. Choose one of the many restaurants for dinner and have a drink in a bar while you think about tomorrow's early start. You can store your luggage at the hotel and collect it before your onward journey to Tirana.
