Depart Fez and climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains, pausing in Ifrane — a charming alpine town nicknamed the "Switzerland of Morocco," with its stone lion sculpture and European-style chalets — and the cedar forest of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques roam freely. Continue through the rugged landscape to Midelt for a traditional lunch, then descend through the spectacular Ziz Gorges and Ziz Valley, lined with thousands of date palms weaving between ochre canyon walls. Arrive in Merzouga as the sun sets over the Erg Chebbi dunes.
